WHY THE Waterberg DISTRICT

Why the Whole Waterberg District

The Waterberg Landscape Alliance (WLA) has adopted a landscape conservation approach that encompasses the entire Waterberg District, providing a clear, unifying vision with global relevance and regional impact.

The Waterberg is a large, contiguous landscape—ecologically interconnected through its rivers, vegetation types, and wildlife corridors—making it ideal for a holistic conservation strategy. By aligning our focus with the District’s political boundaries, WLA strengthens collaboration with government and ensures that conservation planning integrates meaningfully with socio-economic development and the wildlife economy.

This district-wide scope also supports our commitment to Area Integrity, as the conservation clusters, stakeholder networks, and rhino properties we work with span the full region. Importantly, it allows us to protect key biodiversity features and create vital buffer areas while addressing conservation targets across all vegetation types.

Our approach is driven by deep local knowledge, a strong network of engaged partners, and a growing base of biodiversity and spatial data that guides evidence-based action. By sharing knowledge and strengthening collaboration across sectors, WLA maximises conservation effectiveness and delivers measurable, landscape-level impact for the Waterberg as a whole.

By working at the scale of the entire district, WLA supports a shared vision of a resilient, thriving Waterberg — one where biodiversity, people, and sustainable land use coexist in balance.

This landscape-scale model aligns with global conservation priorities such as the Convention on Biological Diversity’s 30×30 target and the Sustainable Development Goals, positioning the Waterberg as a region of both national and global significance.

A district-wide focus ensures long-term ecological and social resilience, safeguarding critical ecosystem services such as water security, soil health, and carbon storage, while supporting sustainable livelihoods.

Working at district scale enables cost-effective investment, shared monitoring systems, and scalable interventions that deliver greater collective impact than fragmented efforts.
