The security focus has benefited not just rhino conservation in the Waterberg but many threatened species. While rhinos are the target of poaching syndicates, all species are important in terms of conservation and protection (both at species and habitat levels) in order to achieve ecosystem integrity.
Therefore, the future of conservation is likely to lie at the landscape level which aims to keep as much biodiversity intact, and key ecosystem attributes such as water catchments in good health.
For the region to realise its conservation potential now and in the future, landscape-level conservation should be recognised and promoted.
Landscape-level protection and conservation will help achieve species conservation and increase wildlife industry opportunities.
The organisation can play an important role gathering information that can be a shared resource between stakeholders/ partners as to what conservation work is being done and what conservation organisations are in the area
To encourage effective management of and to secure the area to sustain biodiversity and ecological processes, to bring benefits to all.
To help secure important biodiversity conservation areas to deliver on a range of ecosystem services for environmental and human wellbeing.
To promote and encourage the increase of large contiguous conservation areas, through conservancies, stewardship, corridors and other mechanisms.
To promote sustainable water conservation management areas, and secure and promote the importance of wetlands and other vulnerable or significant habitats.
To increase recognition of biodiversity importance by leveraging off existing status, as well as seeking further opportunities.
To improve the integrity of ecological infrastructure, improve environmental services for human well-being.
To protect and manage species as important building blocks in maintaining well-functioning ecosystems and thus support ecosystem services and biodiversity economy.
To support the implementation of climate change, mitigation, carbon reduction and ecosystem-based strategies.
The Waterberg Landscape Alliance aims to facilitate a collective vision across the landscape with stakeholders and communities to identify tangible conservation opportunities.
