THE WATERBERG CLUSTERS

Each cluster is part of a whole network that connects and collaborates to enhance security and safety for the whole Waterberg region.

The Greater Marakele Security Cluster

The Greater Marakele Security Cluster is a partnership focused on enhancing the protection of Marakele National Park and its surrounding areas. Comprising local law enforcement, conservation groups, and communities, it aims to combat poaching, illegal land use, and habitat destruction. By improving surveillance and fostering collaboration, the cluster ensures the long-term sustainability of the park’s ecosystems and wildlife, helping preserve the region as a key biodiversity hotspot.

rooiberg bewaria

Rooiberg Bewaria is a Public Benefit Organisation based in the Rooiberg District, 80 km west of Bela-Bela, dedicated to protecting the rich biodiversity of the Waterberg Mountains, with a strong focus on rhino protection. Formed in 2013 by local landowners, it promotes sustainable land use, community well-being, and environmental stewardship. Rooiberg Bewaria works closely with SAPS, Community Policing Forums, and local partners to implement security and fire protection measures, while encouraging responsible development and eco-tourism. Believing that conservation success depends on collective effort, Rooiberg Bewaria unites landowners, communities, and authorities in safeguarding the natural heritage of the Western Waterberg.

The Matlabas custodians

The Matlabas Custodians are a non-profit company rooted in the Western Waterberg, dedicated to protecting its wildlife, landscapes, and communities. More than conservationists, they see themselves as stewards of a legacy—guardians of the land where rhinos roam and communities thrive. Their work is driven by connection, collaboration, and sustainability, uniting landowners, residents, and partners to create a safer, more resilient region. Together, these efforts ensure that both people and nature can flourish in harmony across the Western Bushveld.

waterberg security initiative

WSI is a community-based membership organisation dedicated to creating a safe, secure, and thriving environment for all community members and their families, while promoting a crime-free area for local businesses. Actively engaged in community policing in the Dorset area, WSI supports strategies for more effective crime prevention and collaborates closely with law enforcement to enhance public safety and support legitimate police efforts.

tamboti overyssel ondersteunings groep

The Tamboti Overyssel Support Group is a community-based farm watch group that was set up in the 1980s to bring together the community of the Tamboti River and Overyssel area. The focus is on safety and security as well as  well-being of members of the area. The group also assists with coordinating firefighting other emergency and medical issues.

The Lapalala–Marken Cluster

The Lapalala–Marken Cluster is a collaborative security and conservation network led by JP, the Area Integrity Manager at Lapalala Wilderness. Formed under Lapalala’s Area Integrity Strategy, it focuses on rhino protection and broader crime prevention across a roughly 50 km radius around the reserve. The cluster works closely with neighbouring farmer groups, rural communities, the CPF, SAPS, and the ESU, ensuring coordinated response and trusted local contacts in each area. While not a formal membership structure, it operates on strong partnerships and community collaboration, extending support where it can make a meaningful impact. Beyond security, the cluster reflects Lapalala’s commitment to local development through education, water access, and community upliftment initiatives.
